Building Works: Day 18 – A New Concrete Floor!!

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

Damp Proof MembraneWell a big step in the building project today when the new concrete floor was laid!! I nipped across to the Farm in my lunch break to capture the progress, which I have included in the gallery below.

It was incredible to think that the whole amount (over 10 cubic metres of concrete was required – 2 concrete lorries/mixers) and it was all wheel-barrowed in and laser-levelled using a hand tamper. This means we have a single floor level now over the entire downstairs. (Apart from the existing kitchen which already has a DPM and we will keep the radiators in rather than install UFH).  It all went remarkably quickly, and saw the return of Lee Hart from Lamberts and also a few more new Lambert faces in Sean (aka Hoody) and Sam, the Lamberts Engineer who worked hard on the barrows and tamper.

There was no access for Mark and Dale to upstairs today via the normal route, so temporary access was provided through the bathroom window, which you can see Tammy climbing down from!

One Man and His JCB! (Well two men actually)

Drain repairs from downpipeWe noticed soon after we had purchased Waterloo Farm that the downpipe from the existing kitchen was not actually taking the water away from the house, but it was just ‘appearing’ out of a brick in the house! We then discovered that the drain was totally blocked with mud and silt. We had hoped that a simple ‘rodding’ of the drain would fix it, but this proved impossible so we only had one choice, to dig it up! So on Saturday afternoon Liam and Lee were back, and very helpfully with a shiny JCB!

Just a very short note to say a BIG thank you to Liam Lambert and Lee Hart for their great work! I’ll blog more later about what they both managed to achieve in one day, but just wanted to acknowledge a job well done. Thanks!

Can We Have Underfloor Heating?

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Well in an attempt to answer that question we needed to dig a few exploratory holes, 7 inHole in the Snug - Liam Lambert total! To make things even more interesting, quite a few had to go through quite a bit of concrete. Thankfully Liam Lambert and his colleague Lee Hart from GSD Lambert and Sons were on hand with the heavy duty gear.

There is something slightly un-nerving about watching someone dig your floors up!

Driveway and Brickweave Continues – GSD Lambert and Sons

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

Driveway GroundworksMuch better weather today saw the work to the entrance of the driveway continue. The brickweave started and it really looks great! Liam Lambert, one of the brothers of GSD Lambert and Sons Ltd, has been laying it, which I gather is something of a change from his usual day job – check out who is the JCB No.1 Operator for 2008!! I shall pull his leg next time I see him!
