Some Encouraging News on the Clay Lump and Rewiring!

We’ve had a busy week at Waterloo Farm this week as Nigel has had the week off work, so we’ve been there most days and made some good progress. We’ve had a couple of very encouraging conversations with the ‘professionals’, both of which have meant we will probably be spending less money on certain aspects of our renovation, which can only be a good thing!

Week 4 – The Survey … gulp …

OK, when I said we knew the survey would be long, complicated and require nerves of steel to face up to, that was an understatement … I think it’s maybe even worse than we expected. On a positive note, there is nothing MAJOR wrong like subsidence or large structural faults, but we are going to have to do an awful lot of work to the place, and worse than that, we won’t be able to move in straight away as we’d planned. The Budget is Already Gone!!

Waterloo Farm - Outbuilding - May 2008Maybe that wasn’t such a good idea!! We had a builder come round to Waterloo Farm today (John the Builder!) to give us a rough estimate for some of the work we’d like to get done eventually if we can afford it. Well, about double our budget later and the upshot is none of the work is impossible, but just very messy, time consuming and expensive because of the age of the property. To start with, we asked about renovating the outbuilding which we intend to use as Nigel’s home office. It’s a fantastic old stable and tack room made of clay lump with a red pantile roof, but totally dilapidated, overgrown with plants and full to the brim of ’stuff’. (more…)
