Building Works: Day 3 - More walls down!

Snug FireI would like to start this post by saying how much I look out for my trades people! Whenever you stopped yesterday it was freezing in the house, so today I decided to light the fire in the snug! It worked a treat, and there is loads of wood that is coming out of the house as walls are being removed etc. It created a real cosy room to sit and eat lunch and keep the cold at bay.

However, with more walls coming down today, there was not a lot of sitting down, whatever Tammy might think ;)

The big decision today was to take down a large and unstable clay lump wall, that will create a full galleried landing upstairs. The weight in the material that was knocked down was immense, I know because I helped clear a lot of it.

This was not exactly in the plans, but the wall was quite iffy and the tie beam (in white) was not actually resting on the wall as originally thought. This being removed also means we can now have a full galleried landing, which will look great and work really well.

The rubble that was created was immense though, as you can see below:

It went really claggy underfoot and was a real mess to clean up.

We also got the acros and ’strong boys’ (special acro attachments!) delivered today, as well as the steel ‘I’ beam that will go across the entrance hall walls that we are also removing, which was started at the end of the day.

Too tired to write more now…however, another successful day!!

  1. Mark Says:

Are you burning vintage oak beams?!! :-O

Not yet, wait until it snows! Seriously, I can barely lift some of the old oak lintels, my saw would just bounce off them. There is plenty enough other wood around to burn first to keep warm :)
