I love trees! I feel really privileged to now have a garden with some large specimen trees already in place (a gorgeous copper beech, some large sycamores and even a couple of grand old oaks!), but I’m dying to plant some more! I realise that maybe in my lifetime trees we plant now will probably not reach their full potential, but then it’s not just about us but also about future generations. You may remember from an earlier post that we have a lot of self-sown oak trees in the bottom paddock and that we had planned to dig some up and put them in pots and see how we get on with them. Well, that was another thing I did on Saturday afternoon in the glorious sunshine – we went on an Oak hunt! I dug up 5 in total; four are small and a couple of them look a bit sorry for themselves, but that might just be the time of year – it is Autumn after all! However I was extremely chuffed to find a rather larger one (around 40cm) which had grown very close to the hedge and had therefore survived past grass cutting, hence it’s height. It looks very healthy at the moment so let’s hope it stays that way!
It would be brilliant to successfully plant some self-sown oak trees – what a thing to be able to say, that you grew an oak tree from an acorn – wow!! Sorry if that sounds a bit sad, but I think it’s dead exciting
. The baby trees are currently enjoying life on a sunny windowsill (away from all future building work!) along with some of the sweet peas I harveted from my plants in the summer and have now sown. I’ve never done that before either so am very keen to see if they work! Toby Buckland from Gardener’s World told me to sew them now, and he knows all there is to know about gardening so it must be true!
