A friend of mine reminded me the other day that we have never posted a blog about our Solatube ‘Light tubes’. So I thought it was high time I did!
A light tube is a way of getting natural daylight into a space where typically you might not have any windows. Due to the fact the Farm has been extended many times by the previous owners, the stair well and landing is almost landlocked, therefore we have installed and fitted 2 (third is waiting to be fitted) Solatube light pipes.
The Solatubes are really quite amazing, and do emit an incredible amount of light, even on a dull day. If fact, if there is a full moon we even get moon light coming through it. (For those of you who don’t know, moonlight is kind of grey/blacky/bluey kind of light
) You can see from this picture that the light is a wonderfully diffused and soft light, and the lens or shade is not at all intrusive.

You will see from the photographs that outside you have a little mushroom or as we like to call it, our very own Dalek, which glows at night time! They come with a flashing (not flashing lights!) kit that will suit any roof tile, and as long as you select a simple spot to route the tube, you only need to cut through the roofing felt and remove a few times to fit it.
Also, you can see what the reflective pipes or tubes look like in the loft. You essentially cut them to fit, and there are angled fittings if your mushroom and light source are not directly overhead.
What is particularly nice is that you are effectively getting a light that does not require any electricity. Sure, it does not work at night, but if you have an area in your home that could do with brightening up, I would definitely recommend getting a Solatube light tunnel pipe thing installed!
