It was very exciting this week when when one of the local farmers turned up (a little later than planned!) and topped and baled the rather long grass on the top paddock. It was a very thorough job. One day they cut it, the next they turned it and finally they baled it all up and then it disappeared!
When I say disappeared, what I mean is, I am not sure quite what arrangement we had with the farmer on what was going to happen to the resulting bales. Last year we had to pay for the paddock to be topped. This year I am rather hoping we won’t have to pay and we might actually get paid a little something for the hay as well!
Research has shown that hay for horses can cost from £2-5 per bale. We ended up with 86 bales, which we are rather proud if! Especially as we did not fertilise the grass, we were are told would have resulted in a much bigger yield.
However, it does feel very satisfying that we have acted like diligent ‘land owners’ and almost like a real Farm for the first time. In fact the hay stack looked quite inviting, and in slightly better nick than our house…maybe we should have used some of the bales for our walls??? Now that would have been eco-friendly!
