We have decided that in order to get the very most out of our outside space we need some help! Therefore we have found ourselves a garden designer, Sam, and are both really excited to have her working with us and can’t wait to start the design process! We currently have three parcels of space – the current garden and the two separate paddocks – and know what we want but not where it should all go … just can’t get our heads around it! Ultimately we want to create a kids’ play area, a vegetable plot/kitchen garden, a space for chickens (and maybe pigs!), and a formal garden with beds. We also want to encourage as much wildlife into the garden as possible and have a few spaces to escape with a cup of tea or glass of wine!
Knowing what we want is the easy part - where to put it all so that it hangs together in a logical, cohesive and pleasurable way is beyond our skills. This is where Sam comes in! Sam will listen to all we want to achieve and then come up with a measured plan of our garden including planting and lighting schemes and what type of materials to use on a patio (if that’s in the design!). We can then spend the next 25 years implementing it! We will undoubtedly only be able to create one little bit at a time, but at least we will be able to do so in the knowledge that it is part of a bigger, grand design, whatever order we end up doing it in.
So, the process starts at the end of this week with another survey, this time of the land
That’s exciting as they will measure the entire plot (although it’s only the garden and bottom paddock that will get a ‘design makeover’), so we will finally know just how much land we’ve got! We will be using Anglia Land Surveys who did a great job in producing the measured plans of the house.
You can find more details of Samantha McKay on her website, including some examples of her work.
