OK, maybe the title is a little mis-leading as I guess strictly speaking we didn’t actually ‘grow’ the crop ourselves, but the food came off our land so in a sense it is ‘home-grown’
. I’m referring of course to blackberries! The kids had a great time at the weekend picking some blackberries from the garden. Fortunately they didn’t have to go very far as there is a large bramble just by the patio, and another one just next to the stable (before it got cut down anyway!).
We didn’t really have anything to collect them in (not very prepared on that front!), so they used a couple of ‘giant’ mugs we have at the Farm for the occasional cup of tea (if we remember to take milk
). They didn’t pick many but still managed to get covered in black juice, and as none of the kids actually eat blackberries (the fools), there are plenty for Nigel and I to enjoy a ‘home-grown’ blackberry fool in the future. Here’s the wee crop all ready to be flash frozen (so they keep their shape and don’t stick together). I will be truly excited when I can blog about our first ‘official’ home-grown food, but for now I’m more than satisfied with blackberries from my own back garden!
