Encouraging Wildlife and Garden Birds

Bird FeederWe are really keen to encourage as much wildlife as possible into the garden, and one very small step today was including a feeding station for the birds.

At the moment the garden is rather bereft of any garden birds, which I think is mostly due to the lack of anything to interest them into it. There are not many plants with flowers, which would encourage the insects, which would in turn attract the birds.

So I have arranged for a good friend to come over in the next few weeks, who is an ex-warden of the Farne Islands and keen ‘birder’, to give me some advice. I have asked for his guidance on how we can attract more birds, and also what we might expect to see if we did.

Mr P and our neighbours have both said there is a resident owl who flies down the paddocks, which would be great to see. I have also spotted and hear a green woodpecker in the field next door, and Mr P says there is also a spotted one around as well. Let’s hope the feeding station is the start to a garden packed with lots to see!
