Week 6 – More Broadband Problems

Just when I thought things were looking good for Broadband – Satellite Broadband is not going to work. I checked out once more with the provider what I needed it for, and they confirmed that Satellite will not always work with VPNs.

Due to the high latency or lag of Satellite ADSL, corporate VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) will not work because of the amount of network ‘chatter’. So that has ruled out Satellite – arrggh! I have researched just about every possible option: mobile broadband - our location is not covered; wireless ADSL – due to a hill between the house and the mast we would need an aeriel in excess of 20m(!).

However, I did discover that the phone line in the house is not actually ‘live’ and on talking to a different part of BT discovered that this is the reason the checker was throwing up the lack of availability. So with this knowledge, we only really have one option left: to install a working phone line into Waterloo Farm and then try and get Broadband installed on it. We have now done this and paid for it (it’s possible to order a phone line to another address fortunately!) and will have to wait 3 to 5 working days for it to go live. I’m concerned it might have a DACS splitter on the line so I have specifically requested that the new line will not have DACS on it, especially due to the length of time it can take for DACS to be removed (if that’s even possible).

The worst bit of all of this was having to go and see Mr P and explain that Satellite is not going to work and that we will have to go through the new line process etc. He was very understanding, but I could tell he is maybe beginning to wonder if we are going to be ‘problem buyers’, especially as the deal will succeed or fail based on the availability of Broadband via a phone line … watch this space as they say.
