New Oak Stairs

Oak StaircaseA major milestone arrived today when we took delivery of the oak stair case and galleried landing. Scary thing was it was in 77 different pieces!!

We now have the unenviable task of getting it all sealed before it gets fitted at the end of the week … I sense a lot of late nights coming up.

Fortunately we took the excellent advice of Mark from Classic Finishes in Norwich who recommended that we did not oil the stairs which would have been our approach, but to seal them using a water-based wood sealing product. We took in an off-cut of our stairs and we treated it in real time seeing the effects of the different options. We went for a satin finish ‘Aqua Coat’ product that is made by Classic Finish themselves. It is a stain resistant product which in theory means we could spill red wine on the stairs and simply wash it off, however I would not want to put it to the test! Also this product means we apply it up front and then don’t have to apply any more for about 5 years. If we oiled them we would need to keep topping it and they would eventually go orange!

Time to crack out the rags and sand paper – what joy!
