I Love Recycling!!!

We have so much ’stuff’ at The Farm that needs to be sorted out as a result of all the renovation work. Much of it is just rubbish – bits of old lino, huge amounts of dust and debris, broken toilets and sinks – but lots of it can be recycled, and some of it will even generate a very small income, as I discovered yesterday!

Following our full re-wire, we had ended up with a huge pile of old electric cable which was taking up space in our garage, so I decided to take it down to our local scrap metal merchant, Mellor Metals (www.metalrecyclers.co.uk) and see if they would take it. It was actually rather a fun thing to do (for a first-timer like myself LOL)! After declaring what ’stuff’ I had in my boot, I had to drive onto the weigh table, drive off and unload the cable next to the right skip (actually a friendly chap helped me do that as there was rather a lot of it), drive back onto the weigh table and go in and see the nice lady. Well, the nice lady told me I had 60kg of cable – wow, weighed more than me!! – and promptly gave me £40.20 for doing nothing! Thank you very much! Not only am I extremely chuffed to have got some cash, but even more chuffed that the cable will get recycled rather than sitting in landfill polluting the environment.

I’m now very excited about further trips to Mellor Metals as we also have rather a lot of copper in the form of old pipes and an old water tank, and loads of knackered old radiaotrs which are no longer required due to us now having under-floor heating downstairs. On top of that, all the old concrete and bricks we have generated get taken away for free by our friends at GSD Lambert & Sons where it gets turned into hardcore to be used again somewhere.

I love recycling … especially when I get paid to do it :)
