I feel like wooping for joy as the floor finally is going back down in The Farm! It has been a really hard slog:
- Lifting tiles old floor
- Breaking and removing concrete
- Digging out earth
- Barrowing in hard core, compacting hard core and blinding with sand
- Laying membrane and pumping in concrete
- Laying Celotex
- Laying UFH heating pipes
But at last today the floor screed started to go back down!
The weather was perfect for poor old Paul from Mortimer and Smith plasterers as he had the un-enviable task of mixing the 112 bags of cement and 10+ tons of sand to make the screed and then wheel barrow it indoors.
But, it is starting to look GREAT! You can see the frame below ready for our inset door mat which means it is flush with the floor and does not slip away. We are hoping that it will be completed by the end of tomorrow and will then have the whole weekend to cure and set enough for the second fix electrics and plumbing to continue early to mid next week.

Wow that’s great. Inset doormat… excellent idea!
Glad you like it, the idea of an inset doormat is to spot if sliding around. Now we just need to get a frame made up somehow…might be back to Standley Steels for that one!
It looks like this project was a tremendous amount of work, but it is coming around nicely. I would love to have radiant floor heating, but it is still out of my price range at the moment.
Good luck
Hi Self Sufficient,
Thanks for the encouragement, you are right about the hard work! Not sure we would have started if we had known…however, it is great now!
Cheers, Nigel
Looks easy to do but as you probably will agree it can really work your back muscles!
As screed floor contractors we have to make sure that we take a break every now and then – especially as we are getting older!
